A hundred years after he was frozen, Aang was freed from the iceberg by siblings Katara&Sokka. He quickly befriended them&immediately attracted the attention of Zuko, who was to bring him in by order of his father. A newly formed Team Avatar set out to find a waterbending master who could teach Katara&Aang, evading Zuko’s attempts to capture them on their journey to the North Pole. Roku, Aang’s past life, urged the boy to master the three remaining elements before summer’s end when Sozin’s Comet arrives, or no one would ever be able to restore balance to the world.

Toph was the only child of the wealthy Beifong family. Her parents went to extreme measures to protect her, including hiding her existence from the rest of the world, because she was blind. They expected their daughter to be well-mannered due to their noble status in Earth Kingdom society, something with which Toph secretly disagreed, causing her to resent their treatment. Acting upon the orders of Toph’s father, her earthbending instructor did not teach her anything other than beginner’s moves, unaware that she’d already achieved mastery in the art. She became such a formidable bender that she secretly entered underground tournaments as the Blind Bandit&was successful to the point where she became the champion of Earth Rumble more than once. After meeting Aang, Toph ran away in order to teach him earthbending but also to escape her parents, who never granted her any real freedom.

Aang was taken away from his parents by monks after discovering his identity as the Avatar. During his childhood, he was raised at the Southern Air Temple under the guardianship of Monk Gyatso, who served as his father figure. As a child, Aang had to pick four toys from amongst thousands, and chose the Avatar relics, proving himself to be the Avatar, even though he himself did not know it yet. When Aang turned six, he and several other young Air Nomad boys were taken to the Eastern Air Temple, where they each chose sky bison as their companion. Aang approached his soon-to-be pet Appa&offered him an apple, which Appa accepted, thus marking the start of their lifelong friendship. By the age of ten, Aang had proven himself to be better at bending than his own teachers. For exhibiting prodigious talent with his native element, air, he earned tattoos&the status of an airbending master at age twelve, making him the youngest in history. Due to signs of a possible war approaching, Aang was revealed to be the Avatar four years earlier than the traditional age of sixteen. He felt burdened as the other children refused to play with him anymore. Gyatso was the only one who showed understanding, having been good friends with Avatar Roku, Aang’s past life, and tried to help ease Aang through the transition from childhood to adulthood by providing him with balance through fun during the upheaval in his life. However, after learning that he’d be sent to the Eastern Air Temple in order to complete his training far away from Gyatso, whom other monks thought was too soft on him, Aang ran away on Appa. Shortly after, they were caught in a storm, crashing in the water&being swallowed by the waves. Aang saved himself&Appa while semi-consciously entering the Avatar State, freezing the two in a sphere of ice by using a combination of airbending&waterbending. The Avatar State kept him alive in the iceberg for about a hundred years while the war raged on…

Drilled relentlessly by his father in waterbending, Noatak displayed a natural talent for it, quickly impressing Yakone&mastering the art. The young prodigy just as quickly successfully learned the rare&outlawed art of bloodbending to the point where he can perform it at any time, becoming exceptionally skilled&powerful at the ability. At the same time, he also learned his father’s special skill of psychic-bending, allowing him to perform his skills not only through physical movement, but also through sheer focus. As the son of the infamous bloodbending criminal, Amon was also able to use more common bloodbending techniques like body manipulation to an extremely powerful degree while exerting minimal effort. He could also levitate targets, subdue them, and knock them unconscious. With his skill in psychic-bending, he could also bloodbend multiple targets into submission while able to freely move in for other measures to finish his foes. Additionally, he exhibited the ability to resist bloodbending, even against his brother Tarrlok.

Legend of Korra Cover, by Bryan Konietzko and Joaquim Dos Santos.
Mai was born in the Fire Nation to a noble family. She was an only child&was given whatever she wanted if she behaved. Her parents were strict&they required her to stay silent, which led to her emotional distance. She despised her life to the point she would throw knives at her wall out of boredom. Mai attended the Royal Fire Academy for Girls and became friends with Azula and Ty Lee. She showed interest in Zuko, turning away shyly&blushing when he walked by. Mai described Omashu as “unbearably bleak” and complained of how bored she was, stating she was even more bored than she was back in the Fire Nation. Thinking Aang was responsible for trying to crush her, she pursued him. Desperate to get out of Omashu, Mai agreed to join Azula on her mission to capture the fugitive Zuko. At the Boiling Rock, Mai allowed Zuko to escape&was arrested. When asked why she did what she had done as she knew what the consequences would be, Mai scornfully replied that her love for Zuko was stronger than her fear of Azula. Enraged, Azula prepared to attack Mai; despite knowing that her lightning would quickly kill her, Mai answered the challenge, readying a shuriken to defend herself. Much to Mai’s surprise, Ty Lee intervened by chi blocking Azula. The two friends were immediately apprehended by the guards&Azula ordered them to be locked away. After Fire Lord Ozai was defeated, they were freed, Mai finally got back together with Zuko, and she sternly told him not to ever break up with her again.
