Nick Fury, director of SHIELD, arrived at a remote research facility while his second-in-command Maria Hill explained that the Tesseract activated and opened a portal from which the exiled Loki stepped through. He took the Tesseract and controlled the minds of several agents, including Clint Barton in order to aid his getaway. In response, Fury reactivated the Avengers Initiative; Natasha Romanoff recruited Bruce Banner while Phil Coulson visited Tony Stark and Fury approached Steve Rogers himself. After Loki was defeated and the threat seemed to have been neutralized, Fury noted that the Avengers will go their separate ways until a new menace emerged.

Amora apprenticed herself to Karnilla, one of the most powerful sorceresses in the Asgardian dimension. She was expelled for being too undisciplined, so Amora picked up further skills from seducing wizards and Skurge the Executioner into assisting her in many of her schemes. When she first encountered Thor, Enchantress failed to seduce him and ordered Executioner to dispose of Jane Foster, the mortal woman whom Thor loved.
