Naruto featured an extensive cast, taking place in a fictional universe where different countries compete for power. The titular character was Naruto Uzumaki, an energetic ninja who wished to become the leader of his village. Over the course of the series, the boy encountered several antagonists:
Zabuza Momochi was a mercenary who wielded a massive sword called Kubikiri Bōchō (Decapitating Knife). He could locate enemies by sound, killing ‘em without ‘em ever noticing his presence. His talents led to him being hired by Gato to kill Tazuna, a job he was never able to finish due to interference by the latter’s bodyguard, Kakashi. Since he took too long to complete the task, his contract was revoked, with his employer trying to have him killed. Momochi killed him first, though he was mortally wounded. His blade served as his gravemarker ‘til it was taken by Suigetsu.
Haku lived as an orphan since his dad killed his mom when it was discovered he possessed a genetic ability. After wandering from place to place, he was found by Momochi, who recognized Haku’s talents, taking him in as a tool. He ultimately gave his life to be useful to his master, becoming a human shield to protect Momochi from Hatake’s Chidori. Haku could bombards foes with needles, as well as hit pressure points to put opponents in a death-like state, which reflected his pacifistic nature; despite being a “weapon” in battle, Haku disliked fighting, so he did his best to subdue without actually killing.
Orochimaru distinguished himself among Konoha’s most elite. His desire to obtain immortality led him to conduct experiments on others, flee the village, and join Akatsuki. After attacking Itachi, who defeated him, he established his own village as both his personal lab to continue his work as well as to amass an army to destroy Konoha with. His immortality technique involved transferring his consciousness between different host bodies, so his lust for a new host, particularly Sasuke, was his driving motivation throughout most of the series.
Kabuto Yakushi was a child with no memory of his past; he was found on a battlefield by a nun, who raised him as a son before he was recruited by the Foundation to infiltrate numerous countries. However, after the Foundation declared him too great of a risk to be kept alive, Yakushi left with Orochimaru after being promised an identity he could call his own. Highly proficient with genetic manipulation, Yakushi devised means to heal wounds by reactivating dead cells in order to grow new ones.
Deidara was a terrorist bomber-for-hire before being forced to join Akatsuki. Though he came to embrace the organization, Deidara held a grudge all Uchiha, as he felt their eyes looked down on his art. Each of his hands had mouths on ‘em that, by infusing clay with chakra, create “sculptures” that were bombs that exploded with varying intensities. Sasuke was able to systematically nullify his bombs in combat, so Deidara transformed himself into a living bomb in a last effort to prove the supremacy of his power but failed in the attempt, literally “going out with a bang.”
Itachi Uchiha spent his youth as the child prodigy of the Uchiha clan but was treated as a villain for a long time. He was portrayed as being solely responsible for the killing of his entire family, sparing only his brother, with the explanation that he was testing his skills. Around the time of his death, his villainous role was downplayed; not only was he revealed to have had help in killing the clan but also, he performed the massacre under the orders of Konoha’s leadership to prevent an Uchiha coup d’état.
Zetsu was Akatsuki’s second-in-command. His white half was created by Madara among from the DNA of Hashirama blended with plants through the power of the Gedo Statue. Near death, the legendary ninja infused part of his mind into Zetsu, causing his right side to turn black. Through Senju blood, Zetsu could merge into the ground to quickly travel to new locations, making him not only useful as a spy but also to devour bodies of deceased Akatsuki members or those the organization didn’t want found.
Madara Uchiha was a founder of Konoha, as well as leader of his clan. His overuse of the Mangekyo Sharingan blinded him before he gained the transplanted eyes of his younger brother, Izuna, after he died from wounds caused by Tobirama to obtain the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan to continue fighting opposing clans. However, though he agreed to have peace, he felt he would never be accepted, so he ultimately left Konoha to achieve his dream.
