A beautifully tragic Shakespearean dynamic with the fate of the Gordon family in which one becomes an embodiment of the weight of guilt his father carries erupting, and the other an embodiment of her father’s hope, with both sides being imperfect mirrors of each other.

LEGACY OF THE DARK KNIGHT:
When he was eight, Bruce fell into a cave where he encountered a swarm of bats and developed a fear; his father told him that though people fall, they always have the strength to get back up. Wayne’s parents were killed in a robbery and Thomas’s last words to his son were to not be afraid. Bruce blamed himself for their murder: had he not been frightened, his parents wouldn’t have died. Wayne was ignorant of crime’s nature, so he decided to travel the world to understand the criminal mind. In Bhutan, he met a man who invited him to join the League of Shadows, led by Ra’s al Ghul. He overcame his phobia but when ordered to execute someone and he learned of their plan to destroy Gotham, he turned on them and returned home to start a one-man war against the corrupt system. Batman convinced Jim to let him take the blame for Harvey’s murders in order to preserve the former DA’s image as Gotham’s hero and give the city hope. Having retired from crime fighting, Wayne became a hermit and depleted most of his fortune but was forced back into the old lifestyle when Selina Kyle stole his fingerprints. Batman faced Bane but lost to the latter’s superior strength and invulnerability. Bane crushed Batman’s back and ruthlessly beat his face until his mask got shattered and incarcerated him in the Pit. In time, Wayne regained his ability to stand and tried escaping but always failed. Remembering his own fall into the cave, Wayne felt a surge of strength and he made it out. After Bane was killed by Kyle, Batman pursued and stopped Talia, but the bomb would still go off, so he decided to fly it out of Gotham; Gordon asked who he was and he told him by reminding him of the night of his parent’s death, stating, “A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy’s shoulder to let him know that the world hadn’t ended.” As Gordon realized he’s Wayne, Batman flew away with the bomb attached to the Bat. Following the apparent death of Batman, he was identified as a hero and a monument was erected in his honor in the center of City Hall. At a cafe in Florence, Alfred recalled a recurring dream he had during Wayne’s first disappearance regarding finding him happily at a cafe in Italy with a wife. As Alfred sat, he looked up to find Wayne sitting with Kyle across the cafe; he smiled and nodded at him, as did Wayne, having finally found peace and happiness.
