Benjamin Jacob Grimm grew up in poverty. His alcoholic father was unable to hold a job, so much of the family’s income came from his older brother Daniel, who obtained funds illegally as leader of a gang; Ben, who idolized his bro, became embittered against the world when Dan was killed in a battle between rival gangs. Within ten years, he succeeded Dan as head of the Yancy Street Gang. After his parents died, Grimm was taken in by his uncle Jake, who had risen from poverty to become a successful physician, leaving his thug life behind, entering high school, and becoming a football star with the nickname “Grimm Reaper.” While he was a senior at Stuyvesant, Grimm received a scholarship to college, where he met his roommate Reed Richards, who became his closest friend. Upon graduating, Grimm went into the Air Force to turn out as a skilled fighter pilot, as well as astronaut. In the meantime, Richards went ahead with his project to build a starship&came to Grimm to remind him of his promise to fly it. When the government threatened to withdraw its funding from the project, Richards decided to take the ship on a beta-flight himself. Grimm opposed, warning that the shielding might prove to be inadequate protection from intense radiation. Nevertheless, Grimm was persuaded; joining him as passengers were Sue Storm, as well as her brother Johnny. The four friends got into the launch facility&intended to travel through hyperspace to another solar system. However, unknown to Richards, a flare caused Earth’s Van Allen radiation belts to be filled with unprecedented, ultra-high levels of cosmic radiation. Since the ship was designed to block only against ordinary levels, the cabin interior was subject to bombardment that irradiated the four&wrought havoc on the controls, forcing Grimm to return to Earth, where the four discovered mutagenic changes in their bodies. Grimm was transformed into an orange, thick-skinned, heavily-muscled, and superhumanly strong… Thing. Richards convinced the others that they should use their new powers for the good of humanity as members of a team named the Fantastic Four. Morose over his grotesque appearance, Grimm named himself the Thing, who is 6 ft, weighs 500 lbs, and has rock-like hide that enabled him to lift up to at least a hundred tons; however, he had shown multiple feats that required a strength level that was capable of lifting an oil rig, holding back a giant spacecraft from jettisoning from Earth, and stopping a multiple-story building from falling over, as well as putting it back into place, with the structure weighing roughly 30,000 tons. Also, the composition of his body rendered him highly resistant to physical injury, being able to withstand the force of Hulk’s punches, massive explosions, temperatures ranging from -75 to 800 degrees for up to an hour, yet he could sustain damage when being slashed by adamantium, one of few things that laid a scratch on his body.
