Ororo Munroe was a descendant of an ancient line of African priestesses, all of whom have white hair, blue eyes, and the potential to wield magic. Her mother, N’Daré, was the princess of a tribe in Kenya who married an American photojournalist&moved with him to Manhattan, where the mutant was born. When she was barely a year old, Munroe moved to Egypt. At age five, a plane crash destroyed their home, killing her parents. She survived after being buried under rubble next to her mother’s body; this traumatizing effect left her with severe claustrophobia that still afflicted her today. Homeless&orphaned, she was found by a gang of street urchins who took her to their master, Achmed El Gibár, who trained her in the arts of thievery. In Cairo, she picked the pocket of a tourist, Charles Xavier, who managed to stop the theft. Years later, feeling an urge to wander south, Munroe naively accepted a ride from a stranger&was almost raped. Forced to defend herself, she killed him&swore never to take another life. Her ability to psionically control the weather emerged&she rescued T’Challa, a prince of Wakanda, from his would-be kidnappers, and she subsequently lost her virginity to him at the age of just twelve.
