Cain Marko was sent to boarding schools but he kept getting expelled. His father’s colleague Brian Xavier, died in an accident, and Dr. Marko married his widow, Sharon, for her wealth. Marko favored his smart stepson, Charles, to his own son, which led to Cain bullying Charles. Charles’s telepathic powers emerged and, on one occasion, he found himself experiencing the anguished thoughts of Cain. The inexperienced Charles could not control or end his contact with Cain’s mind but somehow, Cain sensed that Charles was reading his mind. Sharon died of a broken heart, leaving Charles to live with his stepfather and abusive stepbrother. During an argument over money, Cain accused his father of having a hand in Xavier’s “accidental” death. Charles overheard the conversation&when Cain realized, he destroyed some chemical experiments, throwing a vial of liquid that caused containers to shatter, spilling the chemicals. The collision of different substances caused a violent explosion that left the lab aflame. Though Marko managed to rescue both the boys, he died of smoke inhalation. In his dying words, Marko begged forgiveness for not saving Xavier when he had the chance. Cain continued to live in the Xavier mansion, growing increasingly resentful of his stepbrother’s achievements. Cain&Charles served together in the same military unit in Korea. Cain went into a cave that housed the lost secret Temple of Cyttorak, a powerful mystical entity. Cain impulsively grabbed a glowing ruby from the lap of an idol&read the inscription: “Whosoever touches this gem shall possess the power of the Crimson Bands. Henceforth, you who read these words shall become forevermore a human juggernaut.” As Charles watched, the gem’s power transformed Cain into a larger, superhuman being. Explosive bombardment caused a cave-in&Cain was buried under tons of rock.
